Benetton Rugby, buoyed by a win in the first game of the season away to the Dragons faced the Cardiff Blues at home in Round 2 of the Guinness PRO14

The Stadio Comunale di Monigo held witness to an action packed game, no doubt whetting the appetite of the Benetton fans that surely couldn’t have imagined the season they were about to have. First on their minds would have been to chalk off a home win in the 2018/19 season.

Scoreless from the 54th minute with three unanswered Gareth Anscombe penalties pushing the visitors out by 5 points, the Treviso men dug deep. Camped close to the Blues try line and applying unwavering pressure to the extent of two yellow cards being branded, it felt like only a matter of time, that was now in the red, before a break could be found.

Forward to what must have been an eternity to the home fans and indeed the industrious forwards, the ball found its way wide to arguably the most stylish man in the Guinness PRO14 league, Monty Ioane to cross the whitewash on 83 minutes.

25-25, ball and man hugging the touchline, it was all in Tommaso Allan’s hands now. Split the posts and Benetton secure a two-win start to the season for the first time ever. Miss, and it’s a draw, deflation ensues at what could have been.

Needless to say, the former occurred and the man Allan was mobbed. Cult hero status secured.
