Ulster Rugby’s 24-17 win over Munster on New Year’s Day was perhaps the most eye-catching of all the results in Round 12 of the Guinness PRO14.
Munster had no doubt targeted a big win following their defeat to Leinster the week before but it was the Ulstermen who proved victorious, coming from behind to seal a memorable bonus-point win.
A crucial factor in the victory was wing Craig Gilroy, who grabbed a double to help pile the pressure on the men from Limerick.
The young winger bagged his first try and Ulster’s second just after the hour-mark and a concerted spell of pressure from the home side.
Gilroy held his width on the right flank and was spotted by Darren Cave who poked the ball through, with Gilroy delivering the finishing touch with a creative spin to get the ball over the line.
10 minutes later and Gilroy repeated the trick, again holding his width to give fly-half Christian Lealiifano the opportunity to spin a huge pass out for the equalising score, utilising the overlap perfectly.
Rob Lyttle scored late on to seal the bonus point and take Ulster up to 40 points in Conference B, just six behind the impressive Leinster.
