Gerald Davies, Chairman of PRO14 Rugby has expressed his delight and congratulations to Sam Warburton, Cardiff Blues, Wales, British & Irish Lions and Ed Morrison, formerly the Independent Referee Appointments Commissioner for PRO14 Rugby, after it was announced that they will both be awarded with an OBE.
It is heartwarming to hear the news that both Sam Warburton and Ed Morrison have been rewarded with an OBE in the New Year’s honours list.
Both men are fantastic ambassadors for the sport of rugby union having appeared at every level of the game.
Sam’s performances for Cardiff Blues, Wales and the British & Irish Lions are a great credit to his determination to fulfil his potential as a rugby player. Off the field of play, Sam is a fabulous person and few come across a finer role model for children and aspiring rugby players everywhere.
I am also delighted to see Ed Morrison rewarded after a career of selfless dedication to our sport. As a referee and then one of the leading referee administrators in the game, Ed always brought warmth and common senses to his roles. Referees have the toughest job in rugby and the impact Ed made when holding the whistle, and when guiding the next generation of officials in our Championship, cannot be overstated.
Once again, I congratulate both men on receiving these honours. To Sam, I wish you a speedy recovery and hope that we see you back on the pitch doing what you do best sooner rather than later. To Ed, I hope you are enjoying your retirement which is well deserved after your wonderful career which gave so much to the game.
Gerald Davies CBE,
Chairman PRO14 Rugby
