At 21 years old Marco Lazzaroni of Benetton Rugby Treviso is one of Italy’s top prospects in the back-row department.

Lazzaroni (6ft 2in, 105kg) is a proven tackler with a strong ball-carrying attitude and has been named on the bench for Benetton Treviso’s game with Glasgow Warriors on New Year’s Eve. His power and good lineout abilities make him a very versatile player that can play on either flank or even in the second row, if needs be.

Born in Udine, he played for the local rugby club before moving to Mogliano in 2012 to start his professional career in the Eccellenza Championship (Italian Top Division).

His rapid growth and steady development brought him onto the radar of French giants Toulon in the spring of 2014 but, after the involvement of the Italian Rugby Federation, he decided to sign for Guinness PRO12 side Benetton Treviso.

Since joining the I Leoni he has racked up 31 caps in the league: seven in the first year, 14 last season (two tries scored against Dragons and the Blues) and in 2016/2017 he has already made ten appearances with half a season to go.

Recently he was also selected in the starting XV in both the famous Challenge Cup wins against Bayonne, and he now has 15 appearances in Europe with two tries scored against Munster and Stade Français last season.

Lazzaroni was one of the key elements in the Italian Under-20 Squad at the World Rugby Under-20s Championship in 2014 and 2015. His standout performances in New Zealand and Italy helped the Azzurrini keep their place in the main draw.

At senior level he was part of the group that prepared the 2016 Six Nations campaign under Jacques Brunel and, even if he has yet to make is official debut on the international stage, he is one of the brightest talents in the back row and one that Conor O’Shea is sure to keep his eye on.
