The Scarlets looked in good form as they took their Scottish visitors by surprise with a dominant first half display. Three tries within 25 minutes from Tal Selley, Matthew Watkins and Arwel Thomas gave the Scarlets the start they needed.
Selley’s try came directly from a kick-off after Thomas had put the home side ahead with a fourth minute penalty. The Edinburgh backs were weak in defence and the second try developed as Watkins intercepted a loose pass just outside the Edinburgh 22 to run in unopposed. Outside half Arwel Thomas converted and then added a try of his own just two minutes later. In all Thomas provided 12 of his sides 36 points.
Chris Paterson kept Edinburgh in touch with his boot, kicking three penalties to keep the score down to 22-9 at half time.
Edinburgh’s Hugo Southwell managed to secure a try in the sixth minute of the second half following Derek Lee’s blindside break, that was converted by Patterson to bring the Scarlets score within reach. But a 64th minute try by Mark Taylor took the Scarlets clear again, and Garan Evans’ late try wrapped things up for the home side.
After the game director of rugby Gareth Jenkins, said of his team’s performance: "Maybe not perfect, a lot of room for improvement, but it’s nice to gain that little bit of confidence and feel good about ourselves, and get a bonus point at the end. The next game is always the big one, we go to Munster next Sunday and expect a hard game down there."
