The Scarlets included 20-year-old flanker Jonathan Mills in their starting line-up for the first time and he played a key role his side’s first try after just five minutes. Mills surged into the heart of the Leinster cover and when the ball was spun along the back line centre Matthew Watkins cut through to score under the posts.
However it was Leinster who dominated the rest of the half with David Holwell kicking four penalties and converting Ricky Nebbett’s try to set up a 19-10 interval lead, Bowen adding Scarlets points with a penalty.
The Scarlets however were allowed back into the game when a pass from Holwell was gobbled up by Aisea Havili who dashed from his own half for the Scarlets second try. Although Holwell kicked a fifth penalty the Llanelli side soon had their third try when Barry Davies got in with 10 minutes left. Bowen’s conversion put the Scarlets ahead and they were able to hang on in nail biting final few minutes.
