Spectators at Rodney Parade witnessed a fierce battle in the first half with National coach Gareth Jenkins and his assistant Nigel Davies in the stands.
First blood was taken by Ceri Sweeney from a 26-metre penalty kick. Rookie Lou Reed’s sending to the sin bin saw The Dragons take full advantage scoring a well played try. By the break The Dragons were up 16 – 3.
Within 10 minutes of the restart The Scarlets had taken the lead thanks to the 22-year-old center, Gavin Evans. But Jones managed to pull back the deficit to just one point. The 50th minutes saw Gavin Evans again play a key role in the set-up of Ceiron Thomas’ scoring run.
Nearing the end the tension was high as Sweeney scored two penalties putting The Dragons back into the lead, although this was short lived as after a 30 meter infringement the Scarlets were back in the lead 23-22. The Dragons choice to kick for touch backfired as Adam Black was penalized at an attacking scum.
