Scarlets edge home in dramatic fashion

jmcconnell 29 Dec 2004

In contrast the Dragons who had led only three minutes from the end were ultimately denied even a losing bonus point.
The Dragons had come out firing with Kevin Morgan getting their first try after only three minutes with Ceri Sweeney adding the conversion.

Although the Dragons were dominating with the win at their backs Matthew Watkins had kept the home side in the game when he gratefully intercepted to race 70 yards unchallenged to the posts.

It sparked a remarkable turnaround which saw the home side cross for their second try in the space of three minutes when Dafydd Jones drove over from short range for the first of his two tries.

Sweeney cut the deficit for the Dragons to a point with two well taken penalties  but the Dragons were then down to 14 men after half an hour when flanker Ian Gough was yellow carded for a high challenge Salesi Finau.

The Scarlets took almost immediate advantage with Watkins claiming his second try thanks to an inch-perfect kick through from Bowen before Finau was himself sent to the sin bin.

Finau then turned from victim to villain when his swinging arm caught flanker
Jamie Ringer and he was duly dispatched to the sin-bin alongside Gough.

The second half saw Sweeney and Bowen exchange kicks before Simon
Easterby was sin-binned and with a man advantage Michael Owen was able to drive over, Sweeney’s kick taking the lead.

In a dramatic finale, Dragons Sione Tuipulotu was yellow carded for the Dragons with Bowen slotting the close-range penalty to swing the game back in Llanelli’s favour.
Then came Jones’s match-winning score from a close-range scrum, with Bowen landing the conversion.
