Robinson brothers inspire Blues triumph

jmcconnell 11 Apr 2006

Cardiff Blues extended their rich vein of Celtic League form with a comprehensive 46-11 victory over Border Reivers at the Arms Park.

The Blues were inspired by brothers Jamie and Nicky Robinson who notched a brace of tries and 12 points with the boot respectivel.

The hosts took the early initiative with two penalties from Nicky Robinson and the Borders’ hopes were further dented when flanker Andy Powell was froced out of the game with an injury and Kelly Brown was yellow-carded for slowing down ball.

The visitors managed to survive the sin-binning without further punishment but they were soon further behind when Jamie Robinson crossed for the first try of the game.

Kort Schubert collected a pass from scrum-half Mark Phillips who fed Robinson for the score, that was converted by his brother Nicky.

The Reivers were rewarded for their own expansive play before the break when a swift passing move saw centre Ben MacDougall wrong-foot Chris Czekaj and cross for an unconverted try.

After the re-start the Scots were left to rue another defensive lapse as Jamie Robinson was allowed to stroll under the posts and make it simple for his younger brother to convert.

The Reivers remained in touch thanks to a penalty from centre Calum MacRae but the Blues were soon on the front foot again and a driving maul laid the platform for Australian Marc Stcherbina to slice through for the score and once again provide an easy conversion for Robinson.

MacRae pulled back another three points, but the Blues secured their bonus point when replacement Rhys Thomas went over from a driving lineout.

Replacement fly-half Nick Macleod grabbed an opportunist try, converting it himself, and added the extras when Mark Lewis ended the scoring.

But the joy of the win was marred by an injury to wing Jonah Lomu who had to be helped from the field.
