Patterson and Nicky Macleod had traded early penalties but two more successful Paterson attempts had left the home side 9-3 ahead just before the break.
However it was the visitors who had the advantage at the break, with Simon McDowell awarding a penalty try after Derrick Lee was adjudged to have pulled back Dean Dewdney as the pair raced to a loose ball in the in goal area. Macleod converted and added a penalty – and despite a further Paterson kick right on the break the Blues went in 13-12 ahead.
Paterson and Macleod continued to exchanges kicks before Edinburgh were able to break the deadlock when Ally Hogg set Lee away to collect his side’s first try.
With the home side in the ascendancy the game was completely wrapped up when Michael Pyke collected an interception to race away and touch down under the posts – Paterson’s kick sealing a tremendous win for Edinburgh Rugby.
After the game Edinburgh skipper Todd Blackadder was delighted with the way his side had performed. "In our first few games we under performed, it was a do or die performance today. We owed it to ourselves, our team-mates, our loyal supporters and sponsors to put in a good performance. Our guys turned up with the right attitude and showed what we can do when the attitude is right."
