Ospreys Sink Ulster

jmcconnell 4 Nov 2004

Neath-Swansea Ospreys maintained their undefeated run in this season’s Celtic League as they subjected Ulster to their second successive home defeat with a blistering second half display. The Welsh team grabbed five points to put them back to the top of the Celtic League.

David Humphreys had put Ulster into a commanding 14 point lead at half time after converting tries from Bryn Cunningham and Kevin Maggs. However, the home side were reduced to 14 men after Neil Best was sin-binned a minute into injury-time of the first half.

The Ospreys, with the one man advantage, came out running on the restart and after only 30 seconds of play Shane Williams ran round the weakened Ulster defence to put the first points on the board. 21 unanswered points took the Osprey’s into the lead going into the final quarter.

Ulster came back to level it again after a Humphreys chip for the corner was neatly picked-up by replacement Campbell Feather, Humphreys’ conversion made it 21 all. Henson slotted a penalty from well inside his own half before Sonny Parker’s 68th minute try gave the visitors the bonus point. But the boot of Ospreys’ Gavin Henson took the game out of reach of Ulster, his final kick being an amazing drop goal in the 80th minute.

After the game Ulster’s Mark McCall admitted "We were 2nd best all night. We committed suicide when Neil Best was in the sin bin leaking 21 points." Meanwhile Ospreys coach Lyn Jones declared he was "Absolutely delighted with the win. Ulster are a difficult side to play at Ravenhill but we put them to the sword in the second half. We won the toss and it was a big decision to play against the wind in the first half."
