Munster victorious in top-of-the table clash

jmcconnell 2 Dec 2004

In a game the tempo of which was dictated by the appalling weather conditions, Osprey’s were at a disadvantage having to play over half the game a man down after Ryan Jones was dismissed following an altercation with Donncha O’Callaghan.

Ronan O’Gara opened the scoring for Munster with a 22 metre penalty after 10 minutes. Gavin Henson replied in kind from out wide a couple of minutes later but the best chance of the first half went Munster when Shaun Payne chased a kick ahead only for Shane Williams showing terrific pace at cover to beat him to the touch down.

Gavin Henson’s second successful kick, just before the break, took Ospreys into a 6-3 lead at half time.

Henson and O’Gara swapped penalties again at the start of the second half, before O’Gara turned down the chance of pulling Munster level when he opted to kick to touch and go for a catch and drive. Unfortunately the Munster forwards were held up over the line, and it was another 15 minutes before they had the chance to repeat the move, this time Frankie Sheahan adjudged to have touched down under the pile of bodies.

The home side could not add to their tally which left Ospreys gaining a losing bonus point at the end of the game which was enough to keep them in top spot.
