Munster heap woe on Borders

jmcconnell 17 Nov 2004

Paul Burke was the star of the show once again for Munster, slotting seven kicks, while Rob Henderson and Shaun Payne impressed as the home side ran in six tries.

Second rows Trevor Hogan and Tom Bowman, flanker Stephen Keogh and substitute Martin McPhail all crossed for five-pointers in a win that lifted Alan Gaffney’s side to second in the table with the rest of the round’s games still to come.

Munster were quick out of the blocks with Payne crossing in the opening two minutes and Borders threatened to make a game with it with Ally Warnock kicking a reply minutes later, but that was nearest the visitors ever got as Gaffney’s side went through the gears to dominate the rest of the half.

Bowman ploughed over from a lineout just after the quarter hour and Keogh benefited from a Jason Holland break to get his name on the scoresheet.

Just before the break some good work from Alan Quinlan and skipper Jim Williams created the opening for Hogan to score which also secured the bonus point.

To their credit Borders rallied briefly in the second period with some notable good work from Calum MacRae and Drew Moore but it was all in vain.

They got no reward for their endeavours and it was Henderson who stretched Munster’s lead, but Borders responded with their only try of the game through Charlie Hore.

McPhail and Burke’s conversion rounded off the scoring for the Irish province.
