Howarth’s boot sees Glasgow home

jmcconnell 5 Nov 2004

Calvin Howarth was in great form with the boot kicking eight penalties for the home side as the Borders losing run continued.
Although Howarth had kicked two early penalties it was the visitors who bagged the first try when Steve Scott was driven over from a line out. However two more Howarth kicks restored Glasgow‘s composure but Charlie Hore reduced the gap to four points with his first penalty just before the break.
Early in the second half Sam Pinder squeezed over in the corner for the home side’s first try  but the Borders responded with another touchdown – thanks to fine work by Calum MacRae and Andy Miller who set up winger Ian Berthinussen to score – with Ally Warnock adding the wide-angled conversion.
However with Howarth building an eight point cushion through two more kicks and Wayne McEntee yellow-carded for the Borders Glasgow were able to take control with Logan sealing the game through his first home try for Glasgow Howarth banging over the conversion.
Mark Blair’s late touchdown, converted by Warnock, gave Borders a glimmer of hope – only for Howarth to finish the game with his eighth successful penalty.
