Henson Stars…Again

jmcconnell 4 Nov 2004

Gavin Henson scored 23 points as the ospreys overpowered Celtic League basement boys Glasgow Rugby at the Gnoll.

The utility back, this week playing in the number 15 jersey, scored one of the home side’s three tries and kicked his way 18 points.

In a week that saw the Ospreys part company with long time manager Byron Mugford, and the announcement that Wales forwards Gavin Thomas and Gareth Llewellyn wee to, this was a much needed boost.

And, with a place in the Parker Pen Cup for Wales poorest performing side, a crucial win bearing in mind Cardiff’s huge win in Edinburgh.

Home coach Lyn Jones had been praising his side’s defence in the build up this match, and indeed the victory was based in a rock solid defensive line only breached late in the game by Replacement outside-half Colin Gregor.

The home side had the game all but won by half-time after opening up a 26-3 lead.

Playing with the elements, the home forwards had the upper hand in all phases, especially the scrum.

Henson set the Ospreys on the way with three early penalties against one from Glasgow outside-half Dan Parks.

The Ospreys full-back then benefited from a fine team move to cross for the opening try, which he duly converted.

Glasgow lost lock Andrew Hall to the sin bin after persistent infringements at the ruck, and while they were down to 14 men the Ospreys pounced for their second try through outside-half Shaun Connor.

The visitors had the wind in the second half, but the Ospreys were first to strike after the break with a try from centre Dave Tiueti.

A fourth try and bonus point eluded the home team, though, and it was a late runaway strike from Gregor that concluded the scoring.
