Connacht snatch draw against Edinburgh

jmcconnell 22 Sep 2006

Mark McHugh landed a last-gasp penalty to ensure that Connacht escaped with a draw against Edinburgh at the Sportsground.

Chris Paterson gave Edinburgh the initial lead before winger Matt Mostyn crossed for the first try of the game for Connacht after being put in by McHugh.

Paterson added another two penalties to edge his side ahead once more before going under the posts for a try, converted by the Scotland international, to cement their advantage.

Connacht remained in touch with another penalty from McHugh before the break.

The kickers exchanged further penalties after the break before referee James Jones issued his first yellow card of the game when he sent David Gannon to the bin just short of the hour mark for a ruck offence.

Gunners prop Alasdair Dickinson, flanker Ross Rennie, lock Scott Murray Connachts’ Matt Lacey all followed suit as the game threatended to turn into a farce.

The visitors were reduced to 12 players and McHugh took advantage by slotting two further penalties with replacement Duncan Hodge slotting one for the visitors.

Connacht closed the gap when McHugh then knocked over a long-range effort and then deep into injury time the fly half landed his sixth penalty to snatch the draw.
