Borders upset Edinburgh again

jmcconnell 29 Dec 2004

The Borders – with test scrum half Chris Cusiter back from injury looked the sharper in the opening exchanges. However Edinburgh worked their way back into the contest and edged in front midway through the half when Brendan Laney kicked a straight forward penalty. Charlie Hore responded for the home side with his first successful kick and soon put the Borders in the lead with a second well struck penalty.

However it was Edinburgh who went into the break ahead thanks to a Laney try which he converted himself. The fly half side stepped Ally Warnock and then beat Simon Danielli for pace to give his side a 10-6 interval lead.

Edinburgh suffered a setback six minutes after the restart when prop Allan Jacobsen was ordered to the sin bin as referee Rob Dickson ruled he had used a fist in the middle of a ruck.

After a sustained spell of pressure, Hore reduced the leeway to a single point with his third penalty and took the lead when Warnock sent over a pinpoint drop goal.
In the tense final few minutes, Laney saw a drop goal attempt hit the post  and then deep into stoppage time Tommy McGee secured the win as he crashed over for his sides first try – Hore’s conversion ensuring that Edinburgh would leave  without even a bonus point.
