The home side had taken an early lead when Ali Warnock slotted a drop goal after only two minutes but the lead was short lived as the Dragons punished some lack lustre Borders defence when Ben Breeze was able to fly through and put the visitors in the lead with a try in the corner. Ceri Sweeney’s conversion from a difficult angle gave the visitors a comfortable lead.
However the Borders were determined to keep pace with their high flying opponents – and were only denied by some poor finishing as they attempted to get back on level terms.
The Borders continued to dominate early in the second half and could have closed to within a point as Charlie Hore narrowly missed with a long range penalty – however Hore’s next attempt was on the money and left the bottom club only a point behind with 10 minutes remaining.
Hore had a chance to give the Borders the lead as full time approached – but pulled his attempt wide – and the Dragons were able to come away and underscore their win when Gareth Cooper collected a try, converted by Sweeney, in the fifth minute of injury time.
