Cardiff Blues secured their third successive Celtic League victory by sweeping aside Edinburgh Gunners at 21-10 at Murrayfield.
The Blues dented Edinburgh’s title hopes by notching their first away win in the competition since December as the hosts were made to pay for their carelessness.
Jamie and Nicky Robinson both benefitted from first half interceptions to grab tries, both converted by the latter, to put the visitors firmly in control.
Those scores punished the home side’s inability to convert large amounts of territory and possession into points in the early exchanges.
Most notably Simon Taylor spilled the ball in the wet conditions with the try line looming.
Cardiff struggled to find any creative edge and did not trouble the Edinburgh line until the half hour when Jamie Robinson was tackled inside the 22 after a quick tap penalty had sparked an attacking surge.
Edinburgh confidently opted to kick for position when in penalty range but failed to capitalise and were left to rue their decisions.
And moments after Edinburgh’s Maama Molitika was sin-binned, Jamie Robinson pounced on a loose pass inside his own before running virtually the whole length of the pitch for a simple interception score.
The Gunners were further behind when Blues prop Gethin Jenkins benefitted from some good work by winger Chris Czekaz to go over for the second score. Both tries were converted by Nicky Robinson.
Injuries to Mike Blair and Ally Kellock added to Edinburgh’s woes but Chris Paterson offered them hope with a penalty after the re-start.
Ally Hogg then crossed for a superb try and Paterson’s converison reduced the deficit to four points.
But the revival was snuffed out when this time Nicky Robinson pounced on a loose pass and combined with Rhy Williams before touching down for the crucial try of the game.
He added the extras to give his side a little more breathing space and the Gunner’s challenge faded after Molitika received his second yellow card for deliberately killing the ball on the ground and was sent off..
