Blues Return To Winning Ways

jmcconnell 4 Nov 2004

Although they had much of the early pressure The Blues could only to show a Nick Macleod penalty on the scoreboard before Tom Shanklin was able to dart over in the corner to open a more convincing lead. Macleod and Paul Warwick traded penalties as the sides turned around at 11-3.

The Blues looked more inspired in the opening passages of the second period and after Rhys Williams had a try disallowed Macleod added another penalty before an Eric Elwood break allowed Warwick to peg back the Blues’ lead with his second successful kick.

It was only then that Cardiff Blues, through skipper and man of the match Martyn Williams, began to take control with Rhys Williams finally getting his try and, despite the sin binning of Robert Sidoli, Craig Morgan was able to burst over in the corner before Dean Dewdney collected the bonus point winning fourth score at the close.

After the game Blues’ head coach Dai Young said he was pleased with the performance. "It was a big step up from last week and probably the best we’ve played as a team combining backs and forward together.
"I said before the game that a lot of people had got to put their hands up and be counted; the Internationals stood up and led the way, the rest followed. I’ve no doubts about the quality of this squad."
