Q&A: Connacht & Ireland star Kieran Marmion

Jack Miller

22 May 2017

Kieran Marmion is no stranger to the biggest clashes in club rugby, and played a vital role within the Connacht squad to help take them to the Guinness PRO12 Final in Edinburgh last year.

Connacht Rugby were deservedly crowned PRO12 Champions that day and had the honour of taking the much-coveted trophy back to the Sportsground in Galway.

Kieran kindly took some time out to answer a few questions on Connacht Rugby, Ireland and his future.

What are your favourite memories from winning the Guinness PRO12 Championship in Edinburgh last year?

When we arrived at the stadium and were greeted at the entrance with ‘The Fields of Athenry’. The atmosphere was electric.  The plane journey back afterwards was pretty fun as well!

What do you think of the quality of the other scrum-halves in the Guinness PRO12?

The PRO12 is full of exciting scrum halves; it’s great to be able to play opposite the likes of Ruan Pienaar, Gareth Davies, Conor Murray, Rhys Webb and test myself out against them.

Who do you most like to play against in the tournament?

The inter-pro derby games are always the best to play in, there’s always a great atmosphere and the games are always hugely competitive.

Who do you think will win the 2017 Guinness PRO12 championship on the May 27?

It will be an exciting game after Scarlets’ fantastic win against Leinster, and I think it could go either way, but I’m going to go with Munster!

Who is your all-time rugby hero and why?

Probably Ben Blair, he played full back for Cardiff when I was growing up and I always loved the way he played.

If you weren’t a professional rugby player – what would you be doing?

Hopefully playing another form of sport professionally. That’s all I ever really wanted to do growing up.

What have you learned from playing in the Irish Squad under Joe Schmidt?

The main thing would probably be rounding my game out and trying to get better at all the basics of the game.

What are your plans for Summer 2017?

I’m going to head to Greece for two weeks then go over to Wales for the other two weeks.

What are your hopes for Connacht Rugby for the 2017/18 season?

Hopefully we can get back to the top of the table and push for some more silverware.

What are your own personal goals for next year?

To be involved with the Irish set up and push on as much as I can.
