Ospreys head coach Steve Tandy was understandably satisfied with his side’s seven-try win over Newcastle Falcons in the European Rugby Challenge Cup on Friday.

The 45-0 win was Ospreys’ fourth bonus-point win in as many competitive home games this season.

It was a night of landmarks at the Liberty Stadium as Ospreys racked up their 30th home try of the season, with Dan Biggar scoring his 500th European point in an Ospreys shirt.

Midway through the first half neither side had troubled the scorers, but the home side soon turned on the burners and Biggar touched down before Rhys Webb and Ashley Webb grabbed the second and third tries before half time.

After the break, Scott Baldwin secured the bonus point before Justin Tipuric lit up the Liberty with a fine solo effort, leaving Keelan Giles to cap his European debut with a try double in the closing minutes.

Biggar’s five conversions gave him a personal points tally of 15, making him the first Osprey to pass 500 European points for the region.

Tandy was in good spirits after the game and praised his side’s determination to keep the pressure on, even with the game won.

“Really satisfied, a bonus point win is great, the boys were really efficient,” he said.

“In fairness to Newcastle they battled hard and kept the ball for large passages, but our defence held up – then scoring seven tries is pleasing, and getting a home win.

“Getting the bonus point early makes it more relaxing, it allows you to empty people out and give people a break whenever you can, and have people coming from the bench.

“It’s pretty difficult sometimes, when you come on and the bonus point is already in the bag then you can drop off, but I thought the boys kept going and stuck to our plan, which is pleasing.”
