Pienaar motivated to end Ulster tenure with silverware

Ruan Pienaar will depart Ulster at the end of the season and admits he is desperate to end his spell at the Kingspan Stadium with a trophy.

The South African scrum-half joined the Guinness PRO12 outfit back in 2010 and has racked up over 120 appearances since.

But he will end his stay next summer and is keen to help end the province’s trophy drought, which dates back to 2006.

Ulster have started the season impressively with four wins from their opening four fixtures – including a 22-17 triumph over Glasgow Warriors last time out – to top the Guinness PRO12 table.

Pienaar has been a bastion of consistency in the No.9 jersey over the past half-decade and lifting a first piece of silverware before his departure would be a fitting climax.

And the 32-year-old admits he certainly isn’t lacking motivation to make that fairytale a reality.

“I’m enjoying my time here at the minute and that’s definitely given me more motivation knowing that it’s my last season over here,” said Pienaar.

“Every opportunity I get in this jersey is now special to me. I think now it’s about enjoying the time that I have left in this jersey.

“It’s meant a lot to me over the years and every opportunity I get is now about playing as well as I possibly can.

“I’d really like to leave here with something to show for it. That’s always been my aim since I came over here, to try and win trophies.

“I really believe that we’ve got a good enough group of players to do that, so hopefully the way we’ve started this season will carry on to give us the opportunity to do that.

“That would be a great ending to what has been a really enjoyable time with Ulster.”
