Kingsley Jones was left to rue a disappointing evening with the boot as his Newport Gwent Dragons fell to a third defeat of the Guinness PRO12 season with a 27-11 defeat to Benetton Rugby Treviso.

Tommaso Benvenuti’s score led the way in a 10-8 half-time advantage for Treviso while Filo Paulo and Marco Fuser tries secured a first Guinness PRO12 victory of the campaign.

Angus O’Brien missed a couple of opportunities from the tee, while fumbles in attack kept the Dragons to just one try from the evening, missing out on a losing bonus point.

Lock Rynard Landman was the man touching down for the visitors, but it wasn’t enough to stop a second successive defeat at the Stadio Comunale di Monigo, much to the disappointment of head coach Jones.

“Fair play to Treviso. They didn’t do too much flash. They played very smartly, played in the right areas,” he said.

“But ultimately it came down really to us failing to kick accurately.”

Tommaso Allan kicked 12 points for Treviso, while O’Brien did find the sticks on two occasions to keep the Welsh region in contention.

But Fuser’s late score sealed the victory, underway in their Guinness PRO12 campaign at the fourth attempt.

Jones continued: “We forced things in the end. We were really trying to get back, trying to get the bonus point and credit to the players for that effort.

“But we were a little bit naïve because we allowed another try really, for Treviso.”
