Dragons’ Amos excited by captaincy challenge

Hallam Amos will be looking to emulate Welsh captains Sam Warburton and Alun Wyn Jones when he leads out his Newport Gwent Dragons side out against Treviso on Friday night.

With Dragons skipper Lewis Evans out of the game with a calf injury and vice-captains Rhys Thomas and Nick Crosswell likely to miss out on selection, Amos has been chosen to lead the side.

The 21-year-old winger will be hoping to help the Dragons record their first away victory in the Guinness PRO12 since March 2015.

The Dragons have won just one of their opening three games, against Zebre, while Treviso are yet to pick up a point this term.

Amos admitted he wasn’t the most experienced captain but believes he’s learned plenty from his past captains to be comfortable in the role.

“It will be good, it’s not often at 21 that you are a captain and I am looking forward to it. I don’t think it will affect my game too much,” he told the South Wales Argus.

“I captained Gwent under-14s so have a lot of experience in the role. But I have played under a lot of good captains now – Lions series winning captains (Sam Warburton and Alun Wyn Jones), Rhys Thomas, Lewis Evans.

“I have seen the way they deal with things so hopefully I can bring that to the table.”

Despite the added responsibility, the ten-cap Welshman has been linked with a move away from Rodney Parade to a different Welsh club.

Amos featured in all three Tests against the All Blacks over the summer and said he was more than happy playing his rugby under Kingsley Jones at Dragons.

“I am happy, I’ve grown up here, it’s my hometown club and I am pleased to be playing here and captaining this weekend. The captain doesn’t run off does he?” he added.

“This is the last year on my current deal, but the Welsh Rugby Union and the Dragons are looking to extend it.”
