Kiss disappointed as Ulster miss out on bonus point

Ulster secured a second Guinness PRO12 win of the season with victory over Benetton Treviso, but director or rugby Les Kiss was disappointed not to pick up a bonus point from their trip to Italy.

Luke Marshall crossed early for the visitors, who weren’t quite able to keep their rhythm for the rest of the half, forced to settle for just a 10-6 half-time lead as two Tommaso Allan penalties kept Treviso well in contention at the Stadio Comunale di Monigo.

And while scores from captain Rob Herring and Ruan Pienaar – who also added six points from the tee – confirmed victory for Ulster, a fourth try was not to be forthcoming as the hosts responded with Marco Barbini’s try from the final play.

Kiss was frustrated at not being able to pick up the decisive score, although he gave credit to a Treviso side he considered much improved from the last Guinness PRO12 campaign.

“We probably left a point out there and we’re probably disappointed with that,” said Kiss.

“But we were playing a team that has improved. Kieran Crowley has come over and done a lot of work with them. Conor O’Shea is also over there doing some work with the provinces and they’re building a very good squad.

“We have to take our hat off to Treviso, they kept us honest all game, but we definitely feel that there was another try out there for us.

“We went in with the mindset of going and starting well and we did that, but the next 30 minutes we were camped in our own half.

“We probably put the pressure on ourselves, but there was some good endeavour from Treviso.

“We repelled them and in the second half we moved the game in the direction we wanted to.”
