Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend is already looking forward to seeing his side play on their fast new Scotstoun track, after beating defending Guinness PRO12 champions Connacht in their opening clash.

The visitors took a 13-5 lead into half-time in tricky conditions in Galway, with wing Tommy Seymour crossing with and Niyi Adeolokun replying for the hosts.

The Warriors were looking to avenge last season’s semi-final defeat, and were dominant in the second half as man-of-the-match Stuart Hogg, Tim Swinson, Sila Puafisi and Sean Lamont secured a try bonus point and a 41-5 win.

Glasgow welcome Leinster to Scotstoun next weekend for the first competitive game to be played on the new artificial pitch, and Townsend – entering his final season with the Warriors – cannot wait for a big occasion in the Guinness PRO12.

“It takes a lot of effort to win games against quality teams like Connacht so all credit to the players for the work they put in, not just during the game but also preparing for it during the week and through pre-season,” he said.

“We lost our last two games and we lost them in Galway, so it would have been disappointing to have lost three-in-a-row at the same venue.

“The first-half was very competitive and Connacht were probably the better team. We knew we needed to get hold of the ball and improve our discipline and the players did that and much more.

“I thought the work in the contact area to produce quick ball was excellent and the players put in huge tackles in the second-half. It was effort that really drove that win but the players played some outstanding rugby too.

“Next week is a special game for us playing on our new pitch for the first time against the team who are favourites to win the Guinness PRO12.

“We know it’s going to be a big challenge, they got a win too (against Treviso), but it’ll be great to be back at Scotstoun and I’d imagine it’ll be a sell-out.”
