IN TOUCH: Ulster Rugby RaboDirect PRO12 Ambassador Dan Tuohy

Guinness PRO12 Editor

7 Dec 2012

Ulster lock Dan Tuohy has helped his side to the top of the RaboDirect PRO12 standings with Mark Anscombe’s men securing ten wins from ten.

And after a narrow 19-12 victory over the second-placed Scarlets on Sunday, Tuohy admits that it is great to have a winning mentality at Ravenhill.

Here he tells us who he wouldn’t want to meet down a dark alley, and why Callum Black is the best person to room with.

What are your nicknames?

I haven’t really got a nickname as such, but a few of the boys call me Toots – that’s the only nickname I have ever had.

If you weren't playing rugby what would you want to be?

A policeman. When I was growing up I always wanted to be a policeman. I guess it’s just because it’s a job where you would be doing something different every single day.

Who are your rugby heroes?

I don’t really have any rugby heroes as I am more of a football man myself – I only started playing rugby when I was 17. Robbie Fowler was a massive idol for me, and Carl Froch is an inspiration as he is always testing himself against the very best.

Who has been your best ever roommate?

Callum Black. He is just unbelievable, he’s comedy gold. He always falls asleep with his iPad resting on his big belly, and it’s hilarious to see him when he wakes up.

Who's your gym buddy?

Iain Henderson, our number six. He’s only 20 years old and he puts me to shame on some things, but it is good working with him because he has got great energy.

Which rugby player would you least like to meet down a dark alley?

Jamie Cudmore, the Canadian second row at Clermont. He could definitely handle himself down a dark alley and I’m not sure you would last very long against him!

What are your guilty 'diet' pleasures?

Chocolate – I have got a very sweet tooth. I don’t really like places like McDonald’s, but I love a Twirl. Whenever I go to a garage I get a Twirl and a packet of crisps.

What are your hobbies outside rugby?

I still watch a lot of football, I’m a big Liverpool fan, and I also follow UK boxing. I do a lot of dog-walking too as I have a Border Terrier called Hank, that’s pretty time-consuming, and I’ve just started a business course.

What newspaper do you read?

The Times – I have got the app on my iPad. I don’t just read the sports section, I read the business and the money sections as well to pretend I know what I’m talking about.

Who is your favourite rugby pundit?

I have listened to Shane Horgan on RTE and it’s good to see an ex-professional just out of playing doing some commentary, he’s an intelligent man. I also like Dean Ryan on Sky Sports – he’s very knowledgeable.

Do you have any superstitions?

I have a few, but it’s mainly about how I prepare – my left foot always comes first. Whether its socks, boots or trousers, the left side always has to be first.
