Cudd relishing Dragons challenge

Newport Gwent Dragons’ diminutive flanker Nic Cudd insists he is relishing making a big impact in the region’s back row – revealing he has designs on staying at Rodney Parade beyond his one-year deal with the club.

Cudd has caught the eye in recent weeks – most notably as RaboDirect PRO12 man-of-the-match in last Friday’s 14-3 win over Connacht – for starring displays that belie his 5ft 10in frame.

The 24-year-old only joined the Gwent region in September on a one-year deal having previously played semi-professional rugby with Llanelli.

But after showing he is at home in the RaboDirect PRO12 Cudd has targeted staying around for a little while longer.

“I enjoy the breakdown and being a nuisance, trying to get turnovers and securing quick ball for our backs,” Cudd told the South Wales Argus. “I may not have the height but I think that sometimes works to my advantage at the breakdown.

“Maybe that has counted against me in the past but all I have to do is keep showing what I can do when I am given opportunities.

“I’ve been knocked back a lot by injuries in the past so I am just glad to be playing and hopefully I can get a good run of games.

“It took a bit of time to settle in here and get used to the calls, structure and also the level, because I was mostly playing semi-professional in Llanelli.

“I have been given a chance and I just want to keep getting out there on the field and improving.”
