Kidney challenges Jackson and co to shine

Ulster might be gearing up for a RaboDirect PRO12 clash against Zebre on Sunday – but it will be a doubly busy weekend for the province with six of their players named in the Ireland side to face Fiji.

The Fiji clash is a non-cap international and uncapped Ulster backs Paddy Jackson, Luke Marshall and Craig Gilroy will be given their chance to shine.

Ulster’s Darren Cave, Iain Henderson and Dan Tuohy will also feature in the Ireland XV with uncapped scrum-half Paul Marshall and back-rower Chris Henry on the bench.

And Kidney has challenged his side – especially the Ulster rookies – to grasp the opportunity to impress in the international arena.

“We know that it will be a full test for us and it's a vote of confidence in the fellas that we've picked,” said Kidney.

“These lads who are playing have been training really well over the course of the last two-and-a-half weeks and we feel they deserve their go.

“You have this feeling in the lead-up to matches and fellas would feel good about it but when you get to five minutes before kick-off and the referee's calling you and you go into that 'oh crap' moment and they have to take a deep breath and go for it, that's what I'm really looking forward to seeing.

“And if these lads do what they've been doing week in, week out in a green jersey, then brilliant for us.”
