Scarlets wing Andy Fenby has picked out Dan Thomas and Owen Williams as the ones to watch in the LV= Cup this season, claiming the Welsh region are desperate to secure some silverware this season.

After two opening defeats in the Heineken Cup, Scarlets face an uphill struggle to reach the knock-out stages but their RaboDirect PRO12 form has been impressive – six wins from eight puts them second in the table.

Against the backdrop of the autumn internationals, Scarlets travel to Worcester this weekend for the start of the LV= Cup and are expected to blood a number of youngsters with Welsh stars like George North and Rhys Priestland absent.

That policy has had its benefits in the past with Liam Williams progressing all the way to the international team and a first Welsh cap at the end of last season, and Fenby believes Thomas – a Wales U20 flanker – and fly-half Williams can make their mark this time around.

“We do rotate and give the boys a chance who have been on the sidelines a bit and we have done relatively well from the last few years from doing that,” said Fenby, who helped Scarlets to the semi-finals of the competition last season.

“You just have to look through our LV= Cup games over the last few years to see which ones of our boys have broken through.

“Last year we had Liam Williams and he went on to get nominated for breakthrough player.

“He was up there and you keep watching him now and again this season he has started on fine form and has deservedly made it into the Welsh squad.

“That has happened to numerous players in our squad. We have a brilliant academy at the club and some of those players who have become established first-team players got their first opportunities in this LV= Cup so it is a fantastic competition.

“We have got Dan Thomas. He has been with the Under-20s and he is a highly rated prospect. And 10/12 Owen Williams is worth a watch.”
