Elwood sings Parks’ praises

Connacht head coach Eric Elwood believes Dan Parks’ performance against Zebre at the weekend vindicated his decision to sign the former Scotland international over the summer.

Parks, 34, has played just twice for Connacht in the RaboDirect PRO12 this season, having struggled with a calf injury following his move to Ireland from Cardiff Blues.

But in the 19-10 away win in the Heineken Cup over Zebre, Parks, the RaboDirect PRO12 record points scorer, played an instrumental role by notching 14 points to add to John Muldoon’s try.

And after the match Elwood lamented his side’s lack of killer instinct, suggesting it was an opportunity missed having failed to collect a try bonus point despite numerous chances.

But he was also quick to praise the influence of Parks on the European stage.

“That's why we signed him," Elwood told the Irish Independent.

“When you're playing in big European Cup games you rely on players with experience and with game sense.

“And Dan was very polished this evening in everything he did.

“Parksy coming in gives us another dimension. That’s a young back-line and we're creating opportunities and that’s the pleasing thing.

“We’ll certainly have to be a bit more clinical when we're creating opportunities against Harlequins next week.”
