Ospreys were just for starters – De Marchi

Prop Alberto de Marchi says his Treviso teammates fear nobody after toppling the RaboDirect PRO12 champions Ospreys in their opening game of the season.

The wind howled round the Stadio di Monigo turning the contest into an old-fashioned arm wrestle but thanks to four Kris Burton penalties, it was the Biancoverde who emerged victorious 12-6.

De Marchi’s former team Aironi was disbanded in the summer with a new franchise Zebre taking their place in the RaboDirect PRO12 but unlike many of his former teammates the 26-year-old chose not to relocate to nearby Parma but move north to Treviso.

And despite only having played one league game, de Marchi insists he already feels part of the fabric and he’s backing his new band of brothers to score more high-profile wins this season.

“In the short amount of time I’ve been here, I’ve understood how important the shirt and the club is for me," De Marchi, who has two caps for Italy, told La Tribuna di Treviso.

“Being awarded our shirts was emotional, Ezio Galon (former Treviso and Italy back) was there and I felt pretty emotional.

“We followed our game plan to the letter, even though in the first half we didn’t make the most of what we created.

“I admit that the team did make quite a few errors but we know that we can beat anyone if we recognize our mistakes and correct them.

“From the first day here I understood that want I want everyone else wants as well, I hope that this win is the first of many others this season.”
