Treviso hoping new recruits will be lucky 13

Treviso have been busy bolstering their ranks ahead of their RaboDirect PRO12 season opener against defending champions Ospreys.

There are 13 new faces in all with many of them coming across from the now defunct Aironi including Italian internationals Alberto de Marchi, Simone Favaro and Giulio Toniolatti.

Further Italians arrive in the shape of Michele Campagnaro, and Angelo Esposito from Tarvisium; Marco Fuser (Mogliano); Giovanni Maistri (Calvisano); and Luca Morisi (Crociati).

There is also a strong southern-hemisphere flavour to South African coach Franco Smith’s recruitment drive with New Zealand flanker Dean Budd coming from a spell in Japan, James Ambrosini from Queensland A and Tongan Christian Loamanu from Toulon.

But arguably the most impressive signing is the capture of South African centre Doppies La Grange from the Lions.

Although last season was curtailed by injuries, he is still a vastly experience campaigner who was the team’s vice captain and, at 30, is at the peak of his powers.

Yet the most eye-catching recruit is that of his fellow South African, prop Bees Roux who arrives after a spell in France with Bordeaux.

In 2011, Roux was given a suspended sentence on charges of culpable homicide and drunken driving after a police officer was beaten to death.

In a plea bargain to avoid serving jail time, Roux paid the family of the murder victim R750,000.
