Edwards: plenty of positives from Ulster defeat

Dragon's Jason Tovey kicks a penalty - the fly-half finished with 10 points

Dragons head coach Darren Edwards maintains the evidence of his side’s performance in defeat against Ulster on Friday proves they can claim a fourth RaboDirect PRO12 win against Edinburgh this weekend.

Despite an encouraging display at Ravenhill, scores from Robbie Diack, Ruan Pienaar, Stefan Terblanche and Craig Gilroy were enough to earn the Irish province a 30-12 win.

The defeat made the RaboDirect PRO12 table even more depressive viewing for the second-bottom Dragons – whose points came from the boot of Jason Tovey.

However Edwards is confident it is far from doom and gloom for the Rodney Parade outfit with his side’s result in Ireland vastly superior to that of English giants Leicester Tigers, who lost 41-7 at Ravenhill recently.

“It was tough for the boys because we were really in that game but then you look at the scoreboard at the end and it doesn’t make good reading,” said Edwards.

“There was some really good phase play and some good individual performances but we need to improve in that last third of the pitch and come away with points.

“It was a daunting task because they had beaten Leicester 41-7 in their previous home game but we attacked well, forced them to defend well and only had to make 60 tackles ourselves.

“But in the end if you put in a performance like that then you have to be closer than 30-12.”
