Elwood looking to end European campaign on a high

Connacht coach Eric Elwood has called on his side to end their maiden Heineken Cup campaign on a high against Harlequins on Friday despite having already secured the wooden spoon in the group.

Connacht, currently 11th in the RaboDirect PRO12 table, have lost their last 14 matches in all competitions and with just two losing bonus points from their five European outings, Elwood’s men will finish bottom of Pool 6 regardless of their result against Quins.

Positives were evident last weekend against four-time Heineken Cup champions Toulouse, however, with Connacht just seven points adrift at half-time before going on to lose 24-3.

And Elwood is desperate to reward all the Connacht supporters who turned up en masse in the south of France with a morale-boosting victory over the English league leaders.

“There was a lot of good stuff [against Toulouse] and we were happy with the performance and we went for the full 80 against the best club team in the world,” said Elwood.

“A lot of good come out of it and we have to take that into the last game in the Pool.

“There were a lot of young lads coming on and they were excellent – they’re good kids and that’s positive.

“We appreciate that people made an effort made by all the fans who came out and now we have the chance to finish on a high at home on Friday.”
