Davies: Morgan can flourish in the RaboDirect PRO12

Scarlets boss Nigel Davies says there’s no better place for highly-rated No.8 Ben Morgan to continue his development than in the RaboDirect PRO12.

On Wednesday, Morgan declared his international allegiance for England despite qualifying for Wales on residency grounds having joined the Scarlets in 2009.

That prompted a bout of speculation that Morgan will be pressured by the English selectors to cross the Severn Bridge to further his international ambitions.

The 22-year-old has made a name for himself with his rampaging runs off the back of the Scarlets scrum and Davies believes interest in the player would have become inevitable.

But Davies is adamant it is not a foregone conclusion that Morgan will depart Parc y Scarlets once his contract expires, arguing his exposure to four different nationalities on a week-by-week basis will give him some invaluable inside knowledge.

“It is always harder when a player has made a name for himself and Ben has certainly done that and now he is to become an international rugby player,” said Davies.

“[Moving to England] is something we have not spoken about.

“They have obviously been happy with the way he has been playing here and our style of rugby.

“He is playing regularly against a lot of the players that they play against in the Six Nations in Scotland, Ireland and Italy.

“And he knows the Welsh boys so I would imagine it is quite beneficial for them to have players playing outside their domestic league, particularly if they are familiar with the players they are going to play against for England

"He has been a massive plus for us since starting his career here He is a great ball-carrier, he gives momentum going forward which is priceless in any team and there is so much to his game."
