Prop John Afoa touches down for one of Ulster's four tries against Munster

Ulster prop John Afoa insists the season starts now for the Ravenhill outfit after a landmark win over Munster last Friday.

The All Black prop played a starring role in the 33-17 win over the reigning RaboDirect PRO12 champions, grabbing Ulster’s second try.

And with Edinburgh at Murrayfield next up for Ulster, Afoa believes his side are bubbling along nicely, currently seven points off a play-off place.

He told the Belfast Telegraph: “There is a real buzz in the side, we've got Munster out of the way and we’re looking for a massive performance against Edinburgh.

“We then go into the two big games after that [the Heineken Cup clashes with Leicester Tigers and Clermont].

“The try was actually pretty flukey. Ruan Pienaar passed the ball to me when he could have gone over himself but I’m just happy with how the team are going and with my part in the team.”

Afoa has made a big impact on the pitch with some storming performances in both the loose and the tight at Ravenhill.

But the 28-year-old World Cup winner revealed that he was relishing helping Ulster’s developing props just as much.

He added: “When I signed to come over here it just wasn’t about playing it was about helping the younger guys through.

“We have Adam Macklin and Paddy McAllister and a couple of other young guys and I’ll work with them and it will be like an apprenticeship for them.

“I’m just here to help and I’m feeling good.”
