Cardiff Blues’ new signing Gavin Henson insists he is fit and raring to go after playing the full 80 minutes of the 28-9 RaboDirect PRO12 win over the Dragons.

The 29-year-old made a promising start to his Cardiff career at full-back while Wales winger Leigh Halfpenny played a leading role in the win, scoring 13 points and setting up the final try.

And with a New Year’s Day clash against former club the Ospreys next up, Henson admits he is desperate to earn a starting spot for the Liberty Stadium encounter.

He said: “I felt great out there, fitness-wise I felt pretty good, I had a lot of energy and I was looking to run when I had the ball so it felt good. Hopefully I’ve done enough to get a start next week which would be pretty cool.

“I enjoyed it. I’d have liked to have the ball in my hands a bit more but that’s full-back for you. It was a good result, it was a pity we didn’t get the bonus point in the end but I think we played some better rugby this week so the boys are happy.

“I just didn’t get the ball enough for me but it’s alright, I worked hard for the team and it paid off in the end.”

The Blues proved far too strong for the Dragons on the night with rising star Alex Cuthbert grabbing two tries, while second row Bradley Davies crossed for their other try.

And Halfpenny, who made a scorching break to set up Cuthbert’s second try 15 minutes from time, believes the result sets the Blues up perfectly for next week’s clash with fellow RaboDirect PRO12 play-off contenders the Ospreys.

He added: “It was great, in a local derby. We love playing in them. We had a great crowd out and we have to thank the fans who turned out to watch us. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

“We got to play against some of the boys who we spent a lot of time with out at the World Cup, saw them again and it’s important to get the bragging rights as well. Going into the next game the boys are confident and hopefully we can carry this form into the game on New Year’s Day.

“We would have liked to have got the bonus point. We wanted to come out and put on a performance and I think we did that. At times we played some good rugby and we scored three tries so it’s pretty good.”
