Bennett mulling Ospreys contract offer

Ospreys hooker Huw Bennett hinted he could follow in the footsteps of James Hook by leaving the Liberty Stadium at the end of the season when his current deal expires.

The recent announced by the four RaboDirect PRO12 Welsh regions that would be imposing a salary cap has heightened fears that Top 14 clubs’ spending power will tempt more players to head to France.

Last season Hook, Mike Phillips and Lee Byrne all left the Ospreys to join French clubs while Bennett, and fellow Welsh international Adam Jones, have both been attracting admiring glances from across the Channel.

Both players’ contracts are due to expire in the summer while talks are ongoing with the Ospreys to conclude a new deal, Bennett admits the recent salary cap announcement has changed his perspective.

"We have been monitoring things and it is still quite fresh,” Bennett told Wales Online. “For a lot of guys things are still going to be sinking in for a while and they will be reflecting on things.

"It was news to us and I don't think there will be any immediate reactions from players. I am sure a lot more will be said in time about what is going on because players want to know where they stand.

"These are matters that will be addressed by the four regions and it is good to see them working together and also with the Welsh Rugby Union.

"If an offer came in for any player then you are going to look at it. From my personal point of view with my contract being up at the end of the year, I am in negotiations with the Ospreys and it is about seeing how things unfold.

"It is about stepping back and seeing what happens."
