Blues coach Baber: vital we got our momentum back

Blues coach Gareth Baber admitted it was vital they halted their mini-slump following their 37-26 defeat of Aironi in the RaboDirect PRO12.

Having been the league’s early pacesetters, the Blues’ season has tailed off with three successive defeats including two on home soil.

But two tries from full-back Chris Czekaj along with one apiece from No.8 Xavier Rush and centre Daffyd Hewitt in Italy ensured the Blues headed into the break sitting pretty in fourth place.

By the time their league campaign gets back under way Baber is likely to have his full complement of internationals at his disposal, and he wants them to pick up where they left off at the Stadio Zaffanella.

“It was vital for us to get back into some kind of rhythm,” Baber said.

“Obviously the players have all been very hard on themselves since our last defeat against Glasgow.

“We wanted a response, and I think we got one out there.

“It wasn’t all one way. We were given a good stern test but we came through it.

“For a while we were hanging on by our fingernails but our players showed great spirit and character to make sure we went away with all the spoils.

“Our position in the table isn’t all that bad, and hopefully we can kick on a bit now.”
