Munster’s Murphy seeks consistency

Munster full-back Johne Murphy insists he’s still searching for his best form despite stepping up to the plate to help Munster defeat the Dragons in their RaboDirect Pro12.

The 26-year-old, who joined from Leicester in 2010, impressed sufficiently to join Ireland’s summer tour last year but has struggled for consistency over the past 12 months.

Murphy signalled he was returning to his best with an excellent display in the 20-12 victory over the Dragons – producing a superb break for Danny Barnes’ try.

But while Murphy was praised for making up for the absence of Munster’s Ireland contingent, the former Tiger admitted he had plenty of work to do.

“I was happy with the way I started last season,” said Murphy.

“Then [I] had a bit ofa lull around Christmas time, got back to some form then had another bit of a lull towards the end of the season.

“So it was a bit of an up anddown one for me. I just want to find that consistency.

“Hopefully this is just the start.  There's a few things for me to work on but I'm just looking for that consistency throughout the whole season.10”

“The first half was good. The second half we struggled as the tempo of the game got us.

“The three yellow cards didn't help us much. But we were really good  in that first quarter. So we just have to take the positives.

“We just wanted to keep playing the way we were playing but unfortunately we didn't keep the tempo of the game up.

“There were a couple of opportunities that we left out there but first game and tough opposition, we have to be happy with the four points.

“A win's a win at home first time up so we'll work from those twenty minutes, try to get it to forty, sixty, eighty hopefully.”
