Ospreys speedster Shane Williams has been pinpointed as the man Ireland need to stop to have a chance of beating Wales when the side’s clash at the Millennium Stadium this weekend.

Ireland captain Brian O’Driscoll who also faces Williams in the race to break Ian Smith’s Five and Six Nations Championship try-scoring record, has warned his team this week of the threat Williams poses.

The Leinster centre is currently on 23 tournament tries, just one short of Smith’s record while Williams is currently one further behind on 22, but O’Driscoll insists he is focused on his teams result on Saturday.

“I think Wales really tick when Shane is playing well for them,” said O’Driscoll.

“He gets his hands on the ball a hell of a lot more than most international wingers and he has big moments in big games for them.

“He’s scored over a half century (52) of tries in 70 something (78) Test matches, which is a fairly impressive strike rate.

“Look at that alone and I don’t think you have to be a genius to work out they’re going to get the ball into his hands and create trouble for us defensively.”
