Setpiece improvements for Aironi

Aironi may currently lie bottom of the Magners League but forwards coach Andrea Moretti is convinced the club is moving in the right direction.

Moretti’s men are competing in their debut Magners League season following the introduction of two Italian teams after Celtic Rugby extended its borders and widened its horizons.

And while Benetton Treviso were already well known to the Magners League community through their time in European competition, Aironi found themselves in a completely different situation.

The club was only formed during the summer in preparation for their entry into the Magners League, with the birth of Aironi requiring the co-operation of no fewer than eight existing teams.

It is perhaps no surprise then that Aironi have found life in the Magners League pretty tough so far.

But although criticis may focus on their league position and their winless record this term, Moretti understandably prefers to concentrate on the progress being made at the club.

And for the former Italy hooker, that improvement has begun in an area of his own expertise – the setpiece.

If Aironi can now improve their consistency and challenge for a full 80 minutes, Moretti is convince that first win will be just around the corner.

"We are improving, especially in set pieces,” said Moretti ahead of tonight’s Round 8 trip to Glasgow.

"We are really making some improvement in the lineout: we now gain 87% of our lineout and we aim to get above the 90% mark.

"The game at Firhill will be a massive challenge for us. We welcome back Matias Aguero and other important players and that's very good news for our pack.

"We will gain in confidence from that because, at the moment, we are just missing some consistency. That’s what we need to ensure we are at the top of our game for the full 80 minutes."
