No change despite Henson’s new moves

The Ospreys say nothing has changed regarding Gavin Henson’s future despite the star centre’s inclusion on the BBC reality TV show Strictly Come Dancing and his appearance as a model for the new Wales kit.

Henson has been on unpaid leave at the Ospreys for the past 18 months and hasn’t played for the region since March 2009.

Talk of a possible return remains one of the most popular topics of conversation in media circles, with Henson himself stating that he still intends to make a comeback.

The 28-year-old said this week that he had targeted a place in the Wales squad for the 2011 World Cup but his latest celebrity-based development appears to make that goal even more unlikely as his BBC commitments would leave his hands tied until the New Year.

But while Henson has not been included in the Ospreys squad listed on their official website for the current season, he was today unveiled as the figurehead of an international advertising campaign for the new Wales shirt.

And while rumours continued to surround Henson’s every move, director of coaching Johnson stressed that the door has not been closed and that nothing has changed as far as everyone at the Liberty Stadium is concerned.

"I had one conversation with Gavin a year ago but he has not spoken to me since. The situation is exactly the same as before,” said Johnson, who is currently preparing the reigning Magners League Champions for the visit of Italian newcomers Benetton Treviso this Friday.

"As I keep saying, the door is still open for Gavin to come back and talk as we respected his wishes at the time.

"From the start, I have paid him the courtesy to acknowledge his wishes – I'll continue to do that.

"People can ask me the question about Gavin. But only when he comes through my door and we re-ignite our conversation then I will answer.

"But, at the moment, I will pay him the courtesy of his privacy as that’s where we were a year ago.

"From that, the conversation sits where it sits and I will acknowledge where he is when he comes back.

"I have a duty of care for the other 40 players who are here. That's my duty of care. Since Gavin has not been through my door, I can’t comment any further."
