Scarlets coach Nigel Davies says the innovations in the Magners League will be good for the competitiveness of the cross-border competition.

He cites both the addition of the end of season Play-Offs and the forthcoming inclusion of two Italian teams as crucial in the development of the competition which is now in its ninth season.

"I think we must realise how important the Magners League is becoming, the innovations put in this season have made a difference and with the introduction of the Italians, you will end up with two very strong Italian sides with big playing budgets, who over time are going to put together very strong squads.

"I think that it will add value. The Magners League is what we are do week-in week-out and it’s improving all the time with some quality teams,” said Davies.

When Gareth Jenkins was at the helm the Scarlets were winners of the Magners League in 2003/4 but have not been able to repeat their championship winning work under the leadership of Davies.

And now, the Scarlets are fighting not to finish fourth of the Welsh regions – and a play off for Heineken Cup qualification with an Italian side.

On Thursday night they have to take on Munster at Thomond Park. Defeat would mean they would trail the Blues by at least a point – with a showdown against Dai Young’s team set for April 17 at Parc y Scarlets.
